SIBO: Cause or Effect?

Do you suspect you might have SIBO or are struggling with recurring symptoms despite addressing it?

Let’s take a deeper look at SIBO—what it is, why it occurs, and how we can guide your body back to balance and lasting health.

SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, occurs when bacteria that should stay in the large intestine or upper digestive tract migrate into the small intestine.

This is where your body absorbs most of its nutrients, but these misplaced microbes can compete for your nutrients and create gas as a byproduct.

This can lead to uncomfortable GI symptoms like:

  • gas

  • bloating

  • burping

  • belching

  • abdominal discomfort

  • diarrhea

  • constipation

You many have been told that SIBO is the cause your digestive distress, which isn’t wrong, but isn’t the full picture either. SIBO is not the root cause of your digestive struggles; it’s the effect of deeper imbalances in the digestive system.

At its core, SIBO often stems from compromised digestion upstream of the small intestine, meaning the processes that should prepare your food for absorption aren’t functioning as they should.

This can result from several factors, including mindless eating, low stomach acid and impaired pancreatic and bile secretions.

Here’s the thing.

Testing for SIBO can be tricky.

Breath tests are the current standard, but they have significant limitations and often lead to an incomplete understanding. While SIBO breath testing can be a helpful next step for certain clients, it doesn’t give the full picture of what’s happening in the gut.

That’s why we always start with a comprehensive stool analysis that allows us to uncover other critical factors contributing to GI dysfunction.

These can include imbalances in beneficial bacteria, the presence of pathogens or parasites, digestive enzyme insufficiencies, or even markers of inflammation and leaky gut.

These insights are invaluable because they help us address the root causes of your symptoms, not just the bacterial overgrowth itself.

When we focus solely on eradicating SIBO, as is often the case with a breath test-driven approach, we run the risk of overlooking the bigger picture—what allowed this overgrowth to occur in the first place.

Without identifying and addressing the upstream or foundational issues, symptom relief is often temporary, and the problem is likely to recur.

That’s why my approach to SIBO is never about "just kill the bugs." Instead, it’s about supporting your body’s entire digestive system so it can function optimally again.

By combining targeted insights from a comprehensive stool analysis with food sensitivity testing and a personalized gut reset plan, we’ll take a holistic approach that builds resilience and long-term health.

For so many, this foundational work resolves their symptoms and restores balance—often without the need for additional breath testing or harsh eradication protocols.

If any of this feels familiar, I've got you. By focusing on the root causes of SIBO, we’ll chart a clear path forward that leads to real and lasting transformation.
